"I love you" Quotes for Valentine's Day

Posted February 10, 2012 by Denise Gangnes

"How do I love thee, let me count the ways" is the beginning of a beautiful sonnet by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, a poet who truly had a gift for expressing her deepest emotions. How many of us wish we had that gift! Fortunately, we have the Internet, and with less than a week before the big Day of Desire hits us in the tush with that sharp little arrow, it's good to have some "I love you" quotes prepared for the event.

Of course, there are many reasons to say, "I love you." Maybe you will find yourself stumbling over the words for the first time in a new relationship, or you realize you haven't shared your feelings with your soul mate for a long time. Perhaps you want to make sure your mother, child, or friend know that you care. Make sure it counts! After all, as the great Frank Sinatra crooned, "A simple 'I love you' means more than money."

Approximately 2.3 million couples get engaged each year in the USA, approximately 10% of which occur on Valentine's Day. Are you one who has this magical event planned for the upcoming holiday? Then you definitely need some "I love you" quotes to settle the nerves and ensure a positive response! When my husband proposed on Valentine's Day 10 years ago, he popped the question over a quick lunch squeezed in between two business meetings, which didn't allow for a lot of romantic "I love you" quotes or a long dissertation on his longing to be with me. I might have chosen "When I saw you I was afraid to meet you. When I met you I was afraid to kiss you. When I kissed you I was afraid to love you. Now that I love you, I am afraid to lose you." That would make anyone swoon! And since it's anonymous, you can claim it as your own.

One of the more famous "I love you" quotes carries with it some mystery about its origin. The poet Roy Croft is attributed with the famous phrase, "I love you, not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you." The fact that it is almost identical to a poem by a German author, Eric Fried, and is sometimes attributed to Ms. Barrett Browning, has long been a source of controversy in the poetry world. But it still sounds exceedingly romantic!

Sometimes there are mixed messages in "I love you" quotes, although I do like the fervor of the Italians in expressing "ti amo," like this plump tomato from 16th century author Pietro Aretino, "I love you, and because I love you, I would sooner have you hate me for telling you the truth than adore me for telling you lies." French poet Julie De Lespinasse's "mot d'amour" includes this "I love you" quote, "You know that when I hate you, it is because I love you to a point of passion that unhinges my soul."

My advice is, stick with something simple if you get stuck on Valentine's Day without a clever approach. You don't have to be a Trekkie to appreciate the quote by Conrad Aiken, "I love you, what star do you live on?" Poet and painter Frida Kahlo's "I love you more than my own skin" is an unusual twist. You could probably substitute another body part if you wish, like spleen or uvula. See what works.

Finally, take heed one of the "I love you" quotes of Bruce Willis: "My wife heard me say 'I love you' a thousand times, but she never once heard me say 'sorry'." If this sounds familiar, wine and chocolate go a long way in paving the road to romance!
