“What Women Want: To be loved, to be listened to, to be desired, to be respected, to be needed, to be trusted and sometimes, just to be held. What Men Want: Tickets for the World Series.”
Who can resist a little Dave Berry when it comes to relationships?
And while tickets to the World Series would be nice, guys also like to hear those little sweet nothings now and then. We won’t admit it, but we like to hear how much you love us or that we still turn you on, even if our supposed better days are behind us and our once rock hard bodies have become as roly-poly as a bowl full of Jello.
Woodrow Wyatt was a little misguided when he said, “A man falls in love through his eyes, a woman through his ears.” Not all guys are eye guys; some are suckers for a soulful, loving line.
The challenge is to find the right lines. While the Internet is overflowing with loving lines that will make any woman’s heart melt, there aren’t as many for men. At least at first blush anyway.
Search for “love quotes for men” and you’ll come up with some real doozies such as Margaret Cho’s hilarious, “My boyfriend and I live together, which means we don’t have sex - ever. Now that the milk is free, we’ve both become lactose intolerant.”
But there are others with more sentimental tones out there. You just have to look. How about this one: “You come to love not by finding the perfect person, but by learning to see an imperfect person perfectly.” Add, “And honey, you’re perfect for me” at the end and he’ll melt in your arms right there and then.
Or how about one from Alfred Lord Tennyson? “If I had a flower for every time I thought of you, I could walk in my garden forever.” What guy isn’t going to be swept away by that?
If you’re a fan of the old masters you can never go wrong with Shakespeare when you are trying to tell your honey how you really feel. “So dear I love him that with him, All deaths I could endure. Without him, live no life.”
Of course, there are guys out there who aren’t the sappy variety. Shakespeare could put them off and ruin the mood you’re trying to create. If that’s the case, you can always go with something more philosophical, yet still telling. How about this from Robert Heinlein? “Love is the condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.” Again, add your own little flourish at the end, such as, “and darling, your happiness is mine.”
I’m getting a bit teary-eyed just writing that line. Like I said, every guy likes to know how much you like him, love him or desire him. An “I love you” sprinkled throughout the day or week is nice, but it can be like having peanut butter and jelly every day for lunch. Even though it is your favorite, after a while you simply don’t appreciate it like you should.
Fortunately, you don’t have to be an Elizabeth Barrett Browning these days. The Internet solved the problem of just what to say. Just punch in “love quotes for him” on a site like 1-love-quotes.com and you’ll find the perfect words to say; words that will have your favorite guy falling in love with you all over again and forgetting all about the fact that you couldn’t score those tickets to the seventh game of the series.
A master of the epigram, Oscar Wilde quotes are some of the most witty and clever of our time. The talented Irish author and playwright of societal comedies such as "The Ideal Husband" and the classic "Importance of Being Ernest", was prolific in his ability to observe life in wry and amusing ways. Tragically, his comment, "If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you" was a precursor to his imprisonment on sodomy charges, the harsh conditions of which led to his illness and death. Oscar Wilde quotes are perceptive, playful and priceless, begging th…
