Top 50 Love Quotes - Great for weddings!

Posted March 29, 2012 by Denise Gangnes

We're attending the wedding of a friend's daughter this weekend. I'm attending with my own daughter, who will certainly get misty eyed and start dreaming of her own nuptials. Teenagers love weddings. How many of us have watched the bride and groom give their vows, only to have our minds wander and think back to our own wedding ceremonies?

I'd bet money that we'll hear the famous Roy Croft quote, "I love you not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you." This beautiful message hopefully is true for many happy couples - even if you've been married for decades. Roy himself is a mystery: reportedly a poet who may or may not have written under a pseudonym, it's possible this love quote was actually his translation of a classic German poem. The truth may never be solved, as Roy carried the secret to his grave.

There's no secret about Albert Einstein's surprisingly witty observations. His love quote, "Gravitation is not responsible for people falling in love" seems to reflect his experience with scientific observations; however, he may have had a passionate love life that we don't know about. After all, somebody so obsessed with learning certainly used his knowledge for more than just the advancement of mankind, don't you think?

Mark Twain is another famous personality not normally associated with love quotes. His definition of love as "the irresistible desire to be irresistibly desired" touches each of us - who doesn't want to feel wanted and loved (preferably on a daily basis). It does seem that the mystery of love is at once clear and yet complicated, as quoted by contemporary poet and artist Michael Leunig, "Love one another and you will be happy; it is as simple and as difficult as that."

Another popular wedding quote was written by 19th century poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, whose beautiful essays were inspired by her deep love for her husband, fellow author Robert Browning. Few love quotes are more romantic than her classic, "I love thee to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach." Browning was generally frail and in poor health for most of her life, but the touching sensitivity in her writing and the innate ability to express her innermost thoughts to the world made her one of the most popular authors in history.

Sam Keen penned the popular love quote "You come to love not by finding the perfect person, but by seeing an imperfect person perfectly." I think the only reason it isn't used in weddings more often is that despite its amazing accuracy, it's a bit of a tongue twister! Of course we know that only Mary Poppins is "practically perfect in every way."

A lesser known but equally insightful writer, Antoine de Saint-Exupery was an aviator who will go down in history with this excellent love quote for weddings, and life in general: "Life has taught us that love does not consist in gazing at each other but in looking outward together in the same direction." You may not recognize him as the author of "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye." All that time in the atmosphere and the beauty he observed through the windshield of his cockpit must have inspired him to write these epic quotes. And of course, he was French, so romance was in his blood!

Perhaps I could make a small wager with my daughter that one of these iconic quotes will be delivered during the wedding ceremony. I can use it as a down payment on her own matrimonial celebration ... of course, we all know that won't happen for a very, very, very long time! Here at Great Quotes we have some great Wedding Quotes, and Funny Wedding Toasts! Have a look and have a great day!
